Teaching Practice

Procedures of Teaching

During my stay at Ban Mak Khaeng School, I was given a total of 4 classes to handle (2 section of Grade 10 and 2 section of Grade 11). My subject is English (Oral Communication and Critical Reading), I was given an opportunity by my cooperating teacher to continue her lesson in Unit 5: What Makes the Ocean Blue up until Unit 6: How Global Warming Changes Our World, both tackles reading comprehension and analysis, both topic also covers a sub topic about inference. On the other hand, in Oral Communication, I was tasked to increase the english speaking skills and vocabulary of the students, and also to make them feel comfortable in speaking the Language.

First thing I did is to ask my teacher for a copy of the reference book used by her to teach the subject, she lend me the Critical Reading Book, and Moving Up Book. Unlike in the Philippines, the text book is more on activities for the students with minimal information about the said topics, so I did an additional research about the topics and incorporate those necessary details into our lesson, to make the students understand the lesson more appropriately.

Next thing I did is look for words that can describe the topic such as, weather, climate change, floods that is aligned to global warming, I also include visual illustrations for the students to see since admit it or not, language barrier is hard so with the use of illustrations they can interpret my lesson precisely. This approach can also increase their vocabulary skills as I asked them what they can say about the photos.

Moving forward to making of lesson plan, I submitted one lesson plan and luckily, in God's grace it is approved in one go. I used the Thai Lesson Plan incorporating some Filipino layouts on the template.

During my actual demonstration teaching, I utilized my digital instructional materials since that is what my students prefers. I used canva presentation for my mini-games, and energizer and also I did not forget to bring some tokens for my students. So far, I enjoyed every single moment and exerted a lot of effort to make the teaching and learning hours enjoyable.

I also made sure each and everyone participates in the class, and I remember telling my students that it is perfectly fine to commit mistakes and mispronunciation of words because it will not define them, hence make it a motivation to improve themselves and to become better.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

I always wake up early in the morning in Thailand, our host school, Udon Thani Rajabhat University offered shuttle service for the pre-service teacher who serve their duty hours outside the campus. The service fetched us at girl's dormitory at 7:30 AM, our dormitory is near at Ban Mak Khaeng, it is a 10-15 minute walk and via vehicle just 5 minutes. That's why I am early in BMK, at exactly 7:35 AM, I am already in BMK.

Moreover, based on my official schedule, my class starts at 8:30 AM so Indeed, I am very early. My cooperating teacher also told me that I am not required to attend the flag ceremonies but on my whole journey, I did not missed a single flag ceremony! It is fun since they have their flag ceremony five times a week.

My students also respects time, and I did not encounter any late students even though my subject is there first subject. For my workloads, I finish them as soon as I can so I will not be overwhelmed with too much workload.

Classroom Management

In terms of Classroom Management, I did not have any problem at all. Thailand's culture when it comes to neat and cozy place is incorporated in classroom management, the students cleans the hallways and rooms and also take off their shoes upon going inside the classroom (even the building). Sometimes, minimal noice and interruptions is made since students are goofing around with their friends, and that is ok since it is part of the teaching and learning process, but I always tell the students to focus in the class first and later on, I will give them time to chat with one another.

I also did not encounter problems when it comes to group activities since everyone participates, and my cooperating teacher told me that my approach is effective to student engagement and participation.

Problem-Solving while Teaching

My subject is English and there are unfamiliar words my students can not understand, So I always allot 5-10 minutes of question and answer so that they can ask me questions at the same time I can also ask them question so that I can know if they comprehend the topic clearly.

I also used repetition techniques so that the more I repeat the lesson, the higher chance that they will remember it.
